Stellar Pink Dogwood - Cornus ‘Stellar Pink’
‘Stellar Pink’ is the pink-bracted member of the Rutgers hybrid dogwoods, crossing the American flowering dogwood with the Chinese dogwood to combine soft pink colour with genuine disease resistance. Cornus ‘Stellar Pink’ opens broad rose-pink bracts in mid to late spring on a rounded, well-furnished canopy, with the colour holding better where nights stay cool. For cool climate gardeners who want a pink dogwood without the anthracnose risk of a pink florida, it is the practical answer.
Why Stellar Pink Dogwood
Pink bracts: Soft rose-pink bracts, broader and more rounded than those of the American species.
Improved health: Hybrid breeding gives resistance to the anthracnose and borer problems that limit pink flowering dogwoods.
Rounded canopy: Develops a full, evenly branched crown rather than the strongly tiered habit of the species.
Later flowering: Blooms after Cornus florida, extending the spring dogwood sequence.
Autumn tone: Foliage turns red to bronze before leaf fall in districts with cool autumns.
Ideal Applications
Feature specimen: Positioned as the single spring focal point in a cool climate garden.
Entry avenue: Planted in a short matched row along a drive on a cool climate property.
Shrub border anchor: Grown above rhododendrons, azaleas and hellebores that share its acid, moist soil needs.
Sheltered lawn planting: Sited where surrounding trees or buildings reduce hot afternoon exposure.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m for a grove effect, as dogwoods are not hedged
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 6m
Best Planting Season: Winter while dormant, or early spring in very cold districts
Soil & Drainage: Cool, moist, humus-rich, free draining soil at pH 5.5 to 6.8. It will not tolerate waterlogging or hot dry compacted ground
Establishment Care: Water deeply and regularly through the first three summers, checking the root ball itself rather than the surrounding soil. Mulch to 75mm with composted bark over the whole root plate and avoid any digging or cultivation beneath the canopy.
