Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Corkscrew Hazel - Corylus avellana ‘Contorta’
Every branch and twig of this contorted form of Corylus avellana spirals and curls, so the plant is at its most striking in winter when the leaves are gone and the silhouette stands bare. Pale yellow catkins hang from the twisted stems in late winter, well before anything else is moving. It is grown for structure and winter interest, not for nuts, and it needs a genuinely cool climate to look its best.
Why Corkscrew Hazel
Winter Silhouette: The bare twisted framework is the whole point, best sited where it is seen against sky or a plain wall.
Late Winter Catkins: Long soft yellow catkins appear in July and August in southern Australia.
Cut Stem Value: The curled stems are widely used in floristry and can be harvested each winter.
Manageable Scale: It stays a large shrub or very small tree, so it never outgrows a courtyard.
Crinkled Summer Foliage: Leaves are puckered and slightly twisted, giving an unusual texture in leaf.
Ideal Applications
Cool Climate Courtyard Feature: A single specimen carries a small paved space through winter.
Underplanted Focal Point: Set above hellebores or bulbs so the ground layer flowers while the stems are bare.
Sculptural Pot Specimen: Grown in a large container where the branch structure can be lit at night.
Cutting Garden: Planted in a working garden purely for an annual harvest of twisted stems.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2 to 2.5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3 to 4m
Best Planting Season: Late autumn and winter while dormant, or early spring
Soil & Drainage: Moist but well drained loam enriched with compost, pH 6 to 7.5, dislikes hot dry sandy ground
Establishment Care: Water deeply through the first two summers and mulch to keep the root zone cool, since heat stress is the main problem in mainland Australia. Plants are usually grafted, so remove any straight shoots that appear from below the graft union promptly or they will overtake the twisted growth.
