Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Hazelnut - Corylus avellana
In districts that get a real winter chill, Corylus avellana is one of the few plants that earns its space three ways: a crop of nuts in autumn, a multi stemmed vase shaped frame in winter, and soft butter yellow leaves before they drop. It grows naturally as a many stemmed shrub rather than a single trunked tree, which makes it useful where a hedge needs body low down. Plant two different cultivars if nuts matter, because most selections set poorly on their own.
Why Hazelnut
Winter Catkins: Long yellow catkins hang from bare wood in July and August, well before anything else has moved.
Multi Stemmed Frame: The natural habit is a cluster of upright stems, giving a broad screening shrub rather than a lollipop tree.
Autumn Colour: Leaves turn clear yellow through April and May in cool districts before falling cleanly.
Coppices Willingly: Cut hard to the base it regrows vigorously, which is how straight stems and bean poles have been produced from it for centuries.
Edible Crop: Nuts ripen from late summer into autumn once a compatible pollinating cultivar is planted nearby.
Ideal Applications
Cool climate edible screen: A row along a fence in Tasmania, Victoria or the tablelands doubles as privacy and orchard.
Deciduous windbreak: It filters wind through the growing season while letting winter sun reach the house.
Woodland edge planting: Sited at the margin of a deciduous grove it links canopy trees to shrub level planting.
Coppice bed for stems: Cut on a rotation it supplies straight, flexible stems for garden structures and stakes.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2m to 3m centres
Spacing (feature/avenue): 4m to 5m centres
Best Planting Season: Winter, while fully dormant, from June to August
Soil & Drainage: Deep, moist but free draining loam around pH 6 to 7.5. It resents waterlogging and will not thrive in warm humid coastal zones that lack winter chill.
Establishment Care: Water through the first two summers, since a dry January in the first year will cost you a season of growth. Mulch out to the drip line to keep the shallow feeder roots cool, and remove basal suckers only if you want a tidier framework.
