Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Turkish Hazel - Corylus colurna
Where the common hazels sucker into a multi-stemmed thicket, Turkish Hazel builds a single straight trunk and a broad pyramidal crown, which is what turned it into one of the best street and avenue trees in the temperate world. Corylus colurna carries handsome corky grey bark, large heavily textured leaves that turn soft yellow in autumn, and a tolerance for compacted soil, alkalinity, heat and drought that few deciduous trees can match. Councils and designers specify it for hard urban sites where a maple or a birch would decline within a decade.
Why Turkish Hazel
Single Leader: It grows with one dominant trunk, so it needs almost no formative pruning to make a clean street tree.
Urban Toughness: Copes with compacted soil, root restriction, alkaline ground and reflected heat off paving.
Uniform Crown: The regular pyramidal outline gives a matched, formal look when planted in a row.
Textured Bark: Pale grey corky bark flakes into plates and gives the tree winter interest once bare.
Clean Habit: Roots are deep and non-invasive by the standards of large deciduous trees, and the small nuts drop without mess.
Ideal Applications
Avenue and Street Planting: The classic use, with matched trees down a drive or verge.
Large Shade Tree: Casts dense summer shade over a lawn and then lets winter sun through.
Car Park and Hardstand: One of the few quality deciduous trees that persists in narrow paved planting beds.
Rural Windbreak: Planted in rows on a cool-climate property it filters wind without the brittleness of poplars.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 5 to 6m centres for a windbreak or dense row.
Spacing (feature/avenue): 8 to 10m for avenue planting, and at least 6m clear of buildings.
Best Planting Season: Late autumn through winter while dormant, which is the ideal window for deciduous trees.
Soil & Drainage: Very adaptable, including alkaline and clay soils, provided water does not sit around the roots for extended periods.
Establishment Care: Water deeply once or twice a week through the first two summers, applying volume rather than frequency to drive roots down. Mulch a wide ring 75mm deep, keep grass off the root plate for the first three years, and stake only if the site is exposed, releasing ties within eighteen months.
