Yellow Bloodwood - Corymbia eximia
Corymbia eximia is the yellow-barked bloodwood of the Sydney sandstone country, and it is one of the most distinctive native trees available for poor, dry, shallow soils. The whole trunk and major limbs are covered in soft, tessellated, yellowish-tan bark, and the crown carries broad, curved, dull grey-green leaves quite unlike the fine foliage of most eucalypts. Large creamy white flower clusters appear through winter and into spring, when very little else native is flowering, and they attract heavy bird and insect traffic.
Why Yellow Bloodwood
Bark: Uniformly tessellated yellow to buff bark from ground level into the branches, a genuinely unusual colour in an Australian canopy.
Winter Flowering: Creamy white corymbs open through the cooler months, filling a gap in the nectar calendar.
Leaf Shape: Broad, sickle-shaped, blue-grey adult leaves give the crown a coarser, more sculptural texture.
Poor Soil Performance: It grows naturally on shallow, infertile sandstone soils, so it thrives where topsoil is thin.
Drought Hardiness: Deeply drought tolerant once established, needing no supplementary water in most seasons.
Ideal Applications
Native feature tree: A single specimen on a larger block where the bark colour can be lit or highlighted.
Sandstone and bushland gardens: The natural choice for Sydney sandstone sites and bushfire-adjacent native plantings.
Street and parkland planting: Handles compacted, dry, low fertility urban soils without decline.
Habitat and nectar planting: A significant winter food source for honeyeaters, lorikeets and flying foxes.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 5 to 6m for a shelter row
Spacing (feature/avenue): 8 to 10m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or spring
Soil & Drainage: Prefers sandy, gravelly or shallow well drained soils of low fertility, will not accept heavy waterlogged clay, no phosphorus-rich fertiliser
Establishment Care: Water deeply every week or two for the first summer only, then let the tree find its own moisture, as pampering produces weak growth. Use a coarse mulch, keep it off the trunk, and avoid high phosphorus fertilisers which damage bloodwoods.
