Dwarf Yellow Bloodwood - Corymbia eximia ‘Nana’
‘Nana’ takes everything worth having from the yellow bloodwood, the tessellated buff bark, the broad grey sickle leaves and the heavy creamy winter flowering, and packs it into a tree that suits a suburban block. Where the species can push past 12m, this selection of Corymbia eximia settles into a compact, densely crowned small tree, which is why it turns up so often as a street planting under power lines and in front gardens on the Sydney sandstone. It keeps the species' toughness on thin, dry, infertile soil.
Why Dwarf Yellow Bloodwood
Controlled Size: Mature height in the 4 to 6m range makes it usable where the species would be a liability.
Bark Feature: The same soft yellow tessellated bark, now at a scale where it is seen up close.
Dense Crown: Growth is more compact and bushy than the species, so it gives useful shade and screening.
Cool Season Nectar: Large white flower clusters through winter and early spring bring honeyeaters into a small garden.
Low Input: Drought hardy, undemanding on soil, and needing no routine pruning or feeding.
Ideal Applications
Suburban front garden tree: A native feature tree that will not outgrow a standard residential block.
Street planting under services: Its restrained height suits nature strips beneath overhead power lines.
Informal native screen: Spaced along a boundary it gives evergreen height without a hedge commitment.
Low water native garden: Pairs naturally with banksia, grevillea and grass trees on sandy ground.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 6m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or spring
Soil & Drainage: Sandy to gravelly well drained soil of low to moderate fertility, tolerates shallow sandstone soils, avoid waterlogging and high phosphorus fertiliser
Establishment Care: Deep soak fortnightly through the first summer, then wean the tree off supplementary water entirely. Mulch with a coarse organic or gravel mulch kept clear of the trunk, and resist the urge to fertilise, which only produces soft growth on a plant adapted to lean soil.
