Baby Orange Flowering Gum - Corymbia ficifolia ‘Baby Orange’
‘Baby Orange’ is a grafted dwarf selection of Corymbia ficifolia that flowers heavily at a size most gardens can actually accommodate. The flowers are a clear apricot-orange, carried in dense terminal clusters through summer, and because the plant is grafted onto hardy rootstock it copes with humidity and heavier soils that defeat seedling-grown flowering gums on the east coast. Choose it where you want a native bird magnet in a courtyard or under a power line rather than a full-sized gum.
Why Baby Orange
Controlled Size: A mature height around 3m makes it usable in small gardens, verges and pots.
Flower Density: Summer clusters smother the canopy, and grafted plants generally flower from a young age.
Bird Habitat: Nectar draws honeyeaters and lorikeets, and the large urn-shaped gumnuts stay on the tree afterwards.
Grafted Advantage: The hardy rootstock widens its tolerance of humidity, clay and root disease compared with seedling plants.
Graft Union Care: Keep the union above soil and mulch level, and rub off any shoots below it, or the rootstock will take over.
Ideal Applications
Courtyard Feature: Delivers a full flowering gum display in a bed only a couple of metres across.
Street Verge: Fits comfortably beneath overhead services where standard eucalypts cannot go.
Native Bird Garden: Pairs with grevilleas and banksias to extend nectar supply through summer.
Large Containers: Its restrained root system suits a big pot on a terrace in full sun.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2-2.5m for a repeating row
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3m
Best Planting Season: Autumn in warm districts, spring where frost is a factor
Soil & Drainage: Free-draining soil of low to moderate fertility. Avoid phosphorus-rich fertilisers, and mound the planting on clay so water moves away from the root collar.
Establishment Care: Water weekly for the first summer, then only during extended dry spells, as overwatering is a greater risk than drought. Mulch with 50mm of coarse material pulled well back from the stem, and stake only lightly and briefly so the trunk builds its own strength.
