Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Wild Sunset Flowering Gum - Corymbia ficifolia ‘Wild Sunset’
Grafted flowering gums exist because Corymbia ficifolia comes from a narrow pocket of far south west Western Australia and is unreliable on its own roots in the wetter, heavier soils of the eastern states. ‘Wild Sunset’ is budded onto a hardy rootstock, which fixes both the flower colour and the plant's tolerance, so what you plant is what you get. It stays small enough for a suburban front garden while producing large orange flower heads through summer that draw honeyeaters and lorikeets in numbers.
Why Wild Sunset Flowering Gum
Warm Orange Flowerheads: Large terminal clusters open across the canopy in the hottest months, when little else is flowering.
Grafted for Certainty: Seedling flowering gums vary wildly in colour and vigour; a grafted plant flowers true and copes with eastern conditions.
Manageable Scale: It stays a small tree rather than the 10m the wild species can reach, so it fits under most powerline clearances.
Nectar Value: Honeyeaters, lorikeets and native bees work the flowers heavily for weeks.
Decorative Gumnuts: Large woody urn shaped fruit follow the flowers and hold on the tree for months.
Ideal Applications
Front Garden Feature: A single tree gives a summer flowering event without shading out the whole yard.
Verge and Street Planting: Modest mature height suits nature strips where overhead clearance matters.
Bird Attracting Native Garden: Combines naturally with grevilleas, banksias and low phosphorus companions.
Courtyard Shade: The open crown throws light shade rather than deep gloom over paving and seating.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 6m
Best Planting Season: Autumn in warm districts, spring where winters are cold and wet
Soil & Drainage: Free draining sandy or gravelly loam with low phosphorus; mound the planting position 300mm on clay sites
Establishment Care: Never bury the graft union, and keep mulch pulled back from the stem so the union stays dry and visible. Water weekly for the first summer, then taper off sharply, and remove any shoots below the graft as soon as they appear so the rootstock does not take over.
