Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Wildfire Flowering Gum - Corymbia ficifolia ‘Wildfire’
‘Wildfire’ is the deep red end of the flowering gum range, a grafted selection of Corymbia ficifolia that carries dense crimson flower clusters across a rounded canopy through summer. It grows taller than the dwarf selections, making a genuine small tree rather than a large shrub, so it can be used where a garden needs canopy as well as colour. Grafting onto hardy rootstock is what allows it to perform in humid east-coast conditions where seedling flowering gums are unreliable.
Why Wildfire
Flower Colour: Deep red to crimson, more saturated than the pink and orange selections and highly visible at distance.
Useful Canopy: At 4 to 6m it casts real shade over a seating area or a small lawn.
Nectar Source: Flowering coincides with peak honeyeater and lorikeet activity in summer.
Grafted Reliability: The rootstock improves tolerance of clay, humidity and soil-borne root disease.
Low Maintenance: Once established it needs little more than an occasional deep water and the removal of any rootstock suckers.
Ideal Applications
Front Garden Feature: A single tree gives a strong summer statement in a suburban block.
Driveway Repetition: Planted at intervals it delivers colour along a drive without dominating it.
Native Habitat Planting: Forms the upper layer over grevillea, callistemon and westringia.
Small Shade Tree: Suits courtyards and townhouse gardens that cannot accommodate a full eucalypt.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3-4m for a canopy row
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5-6m
Best Planting Season: Autumn in mild districts, spring where winters are cold
Soil & Drainage: Well-drained, low-phosphorus soil. It handles sand and gravel readily, while heavy wet clay needs the planting raised on a mound.
Establishment Care: Water deeply once a week through the first two summers and then only in prolonged dry weather. Keep mulch clear of the trunk and the graft union, remove any growth appearing below the union promptly, and prune lightly after flowering if you want a denser head.
