Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Cowboy Cactus - Euphorbia acrurensis
Euphorbia acrurensis (now usually treated by botanists as Euphorbia abyssinica) is a tree-like succulent spurge from the dry hills of north east Africa, related to the poinsettia rather than to any true cactus, and its upturned arms recall the saguaro of the American desert. Its ribbed stems lift almost straight up from a single stout trunk, and every rib is lined with pairs of short, hard spines. It is planted as a vertical accent for hot, dry, free-draining ground, and because it carries both sharp spines and a caustic white latex sap, it belongs where people and pets will not brush against it.
Why Cowboy Cactus
Saguaro Outline: Upright, ribbed arms rising in a crown give the classic Western desert silhouette at garden scale.
No Irrigation Line: Once rooted it lives on rainfall alone, so it can go where a dripper cannot reach.
Tidy Footprint: It drops almost nothing and never needs pruning, so the ground beneath it stays clear.
Strong Vertical Line: Its candelabra crown adds height to a planting without casting heavy shade.
Spines and Sap: The paired spines are sharp, and the white latex is toxic if eaten and severely irritating to skin and eyes, so site it away from paths, play areas and pets.
Ideal Applications
Rock and Scree Garden: Rising from boulders and coarse scree, it gives a dry slope or raised rockery a single tall focal point.
Contemporary Frontage: Set before off-form concrete, render or dark cladding and well back from the path, it gives a modern facade a bold, clean silhouette from the street.
Hot Wall Position: Planted in front of a north or west facing wall, it takes the reflected heat that scorches leafy shrubs.
Grouped Stand: Three plants set in a loose triangle build a small desert grove that reads from across a large garden.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2.5 to 4m
Best Planting Season: Late spring to late summer, while the soil is warm and the roots can settle quickly; frost tender, so plant only in frost free positions
Soil & Drainage: Sand, decomposed granite or rocky loam; on clay or in a low spot, set it high on a mound of coarse mix so water runs away from the trunk
Establishment Care: Settle it in with a single watering, then leave it to rainfall except in a long, hot dry spell, and give nothing through winter, when a cold, sodden root zone is the usual cause of loss. A tall specimen benefits from staking through its first season while the roots anchor, and anyone handling it needs gloves and safety glasses, for both the spines and the sap.
