Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Crab Apple ‘Raspberry Spear’ - Malus ‘Raspberry Spear’™ (JFS-KW213MX)
A refined columnar crab apple that delivers exceptional vertical structure without sacrificing ornamental quality. Magenta-pink spring blossom, purple foliage, small deep red persistent fruit and a naturally disciplined form make this a serious choice for constrained sites and precision-designed landscapes. Crab apples flower most heavily after a cool winter, so this one does best in cooler, elevated districts rather than on the warm coastal strip.
Why Raspberry Spear™ Crab Apple
Columnar habit: A genuinely narrow, upright form that holds its line without corrective pruning.
Spring blossom: Dense magenta-pink flowers open among the new purple leaves, colouring the column from top to bottom.
Deep red fruit: Small glossy crab apples ripen maroon to deep red in autumn and hang on the bare branches into early winter.
Winter silhouette: Bare, upright branches keep a clean vertical line through the dormant months.
Clean underplanting: The narrow crown casts little shade, so lawn, groundcovers and low hedging grow right to its base.
Ideal Applications
Narrow driveway rows: Planted at 3 to 5m centres, the slim columns line a drive or entry path without reaching over the paving.
Constrained urban sites: Delivers height and seasonal interest where lateral space is limited.
Vertical feature planting: Anchors contemporary landscapes with a bold upright accent.
Courtyard and terrace containers: Its upright crown suits a large, heavy planter flanking a doorway or set on a paved terrace.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3 to 5m
Best Planting Season: Late autumn to early spring, while the tree is leafless
Soil & Drainage: Deep loam or improved clay that drains freely, slightly acidic to neutral; mound the planting site wherever water lies after rain
Establishment Care: For the first two growing seasons, run a hose slowly at the base each week, and twice weekly in hot, dry spells. Keep a ring of mulch over the root zone, held a hand's width off the trunk. Rake up any fruit that drops, as apple seeds contain cyanogenic compounds that make them unsafe for dogs to chew in quantity.
