Wychwood Ruby Crab Apple - Malus yunnanensis ‘Wychwood Ruby’
Malus yunnanensis is grown as much for its upright frame and its autumn colour as for its blossom, and this is an Australian selection of that species. Clusters of white spring flowers give way to small ruby red fruit, and the leaves, which are broader and more maple like than a typical crab apple, turn orange and scarlet before dropping. The narrow habit is what makes it useful on a suburban block.
Why Wychwood Ruby Crab Apple
Upright Frame: Branches rise at a steep angle to form a narrow oval crown rather than the broad dome of most crab apples.
Autumn Display: Leaf colour is the strongest feature, moving through orange to scarlet in cool districts.
Fruit Set: Small red fruit hang in clusters after leaf fall and hold well into winter for birds.
Foliage Character: The leaves are larger and shallowly lobed, giving a coarser, more substantial texture than other ornamental crabs.
Narrow Footprint: The slim crown works in courtyards, tight verges and beside driveways where a spreading tree would not fit.
Ideal Applications
Narrow driveway avenue: The upright form allows a repeated planting close to a trafficable edge.
Autumn colour in a small garden: One tree carries the seasonal display without shading the whole yard.
Under powerline verges: Its restrained spread and modest height suit constrained street planting in cool councils.
Mixed deciduous grove: Grouped with birches and maples it adds a different leaf shape and fruiting interest.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): Not used as a hedge, group at 3 to 4m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 6m
Best Planting Season: Winter, while dormant
Soil & Drainage: Most well drained soils, including clay loam; it prefers neutral to slightly acid ground with reliable moisture in summer
Establishment Care: Deep water weekly through the first two summers, applying at least 20 litres per application rather than a light daily sprinkle. Mulch to 75mm out to the drip line and remove nursery ties within the first year so they do not girdle the stem.
