Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Ripple Jade - Crassula arborescens subsp. undulatifolia ‘Max Cook’
Ripple jade takes the familiar jade plant and puts a twist in every leaf. Crassula arborescens subsp. undulatifolia ‘Max Cook’ carries narrow, wavy, blue grey leaves edged in maroon that curl and fold along their length, so a single plant reads as texture rather than mass. It builds slowly into a small woody shrub with thick trunks, needing nothing more than sun and drainage, which makes it the low input choice for hot, dry, neglected corners.
Why Ripple Jade
Leaf Form: Narrow undulating leaves with red margins give a rippled, almost coral like texture that ordinary jade lacks.
Colour Response: The blue grey tones deepen and the red edges intensify with strong sun and lean soil.
Water Independence: Stores water in leaves and stems, going weeks between drinks once established.
Woody Character: Older plants develop thick sculptural trunks, useful in gravel gardens and bonsai style plantings.
No Fuss: No pests worth naming, no pruning schedule, no feeding regime, just occasional shaping.
Ideal Applications
Dry Gravel Garden: Set among stone and other succulents where irrigation is minimal or absent.
Coastal Exposure: Handles salt laden wind and sandy soils in seaside gardens.
Feature Pots: A long lived container plant that improves with age and neglect.
Hot Courtyard Edging: Planted in a low run along a wall or path in a reflected heat position.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.4 to 0.6m for a low mass planting
Spacing (feature/avenue): 0.8 to 1m
Best Planting Season: Spring through autumn, avoiding cold wet winter soil
Soil & Drainage: Gritty, sharply draining soil or a succulent mix, and the single most common cause of failure is soil that stays wet
Establishment Care: Water lightly every ten to fourteen days for the first two months, then only when the soil is fully dry. Use gravel or coarse mulch rather than organic mulch around the base, and shelter from heavy frost, which damages the fleshy leaves.
