Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Washington Hawthorn - Crataegus phaenopyrum
Of the hawthorns, this is the one that flowers latest and fruits hardest. Crataegus phaenopyrum opens dense clusters of white flowers in early summer, well after the spring rush is over, then carries bunches of small glossy red fruit through autumn and into winter once the leaves have coloured orange and scarlet and fallen. It is also seriously thorny, with spines up to 70mm, which should decide where you put it.
Why Washington Hawthorn
Late Flowering: Blossom arrives after the spring flowering trees have finished, extending the season in a mixed planting.
Winter Fruit: The red haws persist on bare branches for months and are heavily worked by birds.
Autumn Colour: Glossy lobed leaves turn orange to scarlet, which is unusual reliability for a hawthorn in Australian conditions.
Urban Toughness: It handles compacted soil, reflected heat, wind and drought once established, which is why it appears in street planting.
Thorns: The spines are long and sharp. Keep it away from footpaths, driveways, play areas and anywhere children reach into the canopy.
Ideal Applications
Street tree: Modest size, dense crown and tolerance of hard sites make it a proven verge tree in cool and temperate councils.
Security or stock barrier: Planted in a close line and trimmed, the thorns create an impenetrable boundary.
Bird garden: Blossom for insects, dense twiggy cover for nesting, and fruit through winter.
Small lawn specimen: Set well back from paths, it gives four distinct seasons of interest on a compact frame.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5 to 2.5m for a barrier line
Spacing (feature/avenue): 6 to 8m
Best Planting Season: Winter to early spring
Soil & Drainage: Very adaptable, including clay and alkaline soils, provided drainage is reasonable; it tolerates dry sites once established
Establishment Care: Water deeply every fortnight through the first two summers, more often on sand. Formative prune in winter with heavy gloves and eye protection, lifting the crown clear of head height before the thorns become difficult to work around.
