Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Swamp Lily - Crinum pedunculatum
Crinum pedunculatum is an Australian native bulb that behaves like a large architectural perennial, throwing broad, arching strap leaves from a thick fleshy neck at ground level. It grows naturally in swamp margins, creek banks and behind coastal dunes from New South Wales to the Northern Territory, so it handles conditions that kill most feature plants: standing water, salt spray and sand. The white spidery flowers are strongly scented at night and appear through the warmer months.
Why Swamp Lily
Wet tolerance: One of the few bold-foliage natives that thrives in soil that stays wet or floods periodically.
Coastal hardiness: Salt-laden wind and pure sand are its natural growing conditions.
Foliage mass: Wide, bright green strap leaves give a tropical look without needing tropical care.
Night fragrance: Spidery white flowers release scent after dusk through spring and summer.
Toughness: Once established it survives neglect, drought and heat as well as wet.
Ideal Applications
Rain gardens and swales: Handles the alternating wet and dry cycle of a bioretention bed.
Pond and water feature edges: Sits happily right at the waterline where drainage is poor.
Coastal mass planting: Used in drifts on foreshore reserves and beachside gardens.
Sub-tropical style borders: Provides bold leaf form under palms and frangipani.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.8 to 1m for a continuous mass
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.5 to 2m
Best Planting Season: Spring and summer, when soil is warm
Soil & Drainage: Adaptable from sand to clay and tolerant of poor drainage, though it also grows well in ordinary garden soil. Set the bulb neck at or just above soil level rather than burying it deeply.
Establishment Care: Water twice weekly through the first summer; after that it needs very little attention. Mulch to suppress weeds, and note that the sap can irritate skin and eyes, so site it away from areas where small children play.
