Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Three-Veined Laurel - Cryptocarya triplinervis
Coastal gardens punish most shade trees, and Cryptocarya triplinervis is one of the few natives that shrugs off salt wind while still building a dense, rounded, genuinely shade casting crown. The name comes from the three prominent veins that run the length of each glossy leaf. Designers use it where a tuckeroo would be too coarse and a fig far too large.
Why Three-Veined Laurel
Wind Firmness: It grows naturally in littoral rainforest and holds its shape in salt laden coastal wind rather than shredding.
Canopy Density: The crown closes tightly, throwing real shade over paving, lawn or a courtyard.
Foliage Detail: Leaves are dark, glossy and leathery, with new growth flushing bronze against the mature layer.
Bird Food: Small cream flowers give way to round black fruit taken heavily by pigeons, koels and figbirds.
Root Behaviour: It is far better mannered near paving and services than the large figs often used for the same effect.
Ideal Applications
Coastal shade tree: A single specimen in a beachside lawn or courtyard where exposure rules out softer species.
Tall screening row: Planted at close centres it forms a solid evergreen wall to first floor height and beyond.
Street and car park planting: Handles reflected heat and restricted root volume better than most rainforest trees.
Rainforest restoration: A standard canopy species in littoral rainforest regeneration on the east coast.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2 to 3m centres
Spacing (feature/avenue): 6 to 8m centres
Best Planting Season: Spring to early autumn in subtropical zones; spring in temperate coastal areas
Soil & Drainage: Sandy to loamy soils with free drainage; tolerates poorer coastal sands once mulched and fed
Establishment Care: Deep water twice a week for the first summer and stake only if the site is very exposed, releasing ties within twelve months. Maintain 75mm of mulch out to the drip line to build the surface root system.
