Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Dwarf Japanese Cedar - Cryptomeria japonica ‘Nana’
This is the ground-hugging end of the Cryptomeria japonica range, a slow, densely congested dwarf that builds a rounded green mound rather than a trunk. Branchlets are short and slightly twisted, giving the surface a rippled, almost coral-like texture that holds its shape without clipping. It is the conifer to use where a designer wants year-round mass at knee to waist height and cannot afford a plant that will outgrow the space.
Why Dwarf Japanese Cedar
Genuinely small: This is a true dwarf selection, not a young plant of a large tree, so the mature footprint is predictable.
Sculptural surface: Congested branchlets create a cushioned, undulating outline that catches shadow beautifully in low light.
Seasonal tinting: Foliage takes on a bronze to russet flush through cold winters, then returns to mid green in spring.
Structure without pruning: The mound holds its form unaided, which suits gardens where regular hedging is not realistic.
Frost hardiness: It handles the cold of Canberra, Ballarat, the Blue Mountains and Tasmanian gardens without protection.
Ideal Applications
Low structural border: Repeated at even spacing it forms a soft green kerb along a path or driveway.
Rockery and gravel gardens: The compact mound sits well between boulders and low groundcover conifers.
Large containers: It tolerates root restriction and gives a permanent evergreen anchor in pots and planter boxes.
Japanese garden detail: The clipped-looking form works as a stand-in for cloud-pruned mass at a fraction of the upkeep.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.8 to 1m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.5 to 2m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or spring in temperate districts; spring only in the coldest zones
Soil & Drainage: Moisture retentive but free draining loam, slightly acidic to neutral. Waterlogged clay causes root loss, so raise the bed or improve drainage first.
Establishment Care: Water twice weekly for the first summer, tapering to weekly deep soaks once new growth appears at the tips. Mulch with fine bark to keep the root zone cool, and hose the foliage occasionally in dry inland conditions to discourage mites in the dense interior.
