Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Bhutan Cypress (Topiary Pyramid) - Cupressus torulosa
Clipped to a pyramid, Cupressus torulosa gives the most useful shape in formal planting: a tapered cone with a defined apex that draws the eye upward and holds a strong line from every angle. The taper is what makes it work in tight positions, because the base occupies little ground while the form still reads at full height. Bhutan cypress takes to this treatment better than most conifers because its foliage is fine enough to hold a sharp edge and vigorous enough to close over a cut face quickly.
Why the Pyramid Form
Vertical Emphasis: The tapered cone lifts the eye and gives a garden bed height without visual bulk.
Small Footprint: The narrow base fits beside paths, steps and gateways where a rounded topiary would crowd the space.
Edge Definition: Fine dense foliage takes a clean clipped face, so the flat sides and apex stay crisp.
Weather Hardiness: Tolerant of frost, heat and dry inland summers, so the form is not lost in a bad season.
Even Regrowth: Regrowth after clipping is uniform, which means the cone recovers its geometry rather than going lumpy.
Ideal Applications
Gateway Sentinels: A pair either side of an opening reads as a formal threshold.
Path Punctuation: Repeated along a path at even intervals to give a long run rhythm and scale.
Parterre Corners: Marks the corners of a clipped hedge parterre or a kitchen garden bed.
Narrow Bed Verticals: The tapered base suits a bed only 600 to 800mm deep against a wall or fence.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.2 to 1.5m where a run of cones should merge into a line.
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 3m for individually read forms.
Best Planting Season: Autumn or spring while temperatures are mild.
Soil & Drainage: Free draining and undemanding on fertility. Poor and alkaline soils are fine, wet ground is not.
Establishment Care: Give a deep soak twice weekly through the first summer, then weekly, always aimed at the root ball rather than the foliage. Clip twice a year in dry weather to hold the taper, working from the apex down, and mulch to keep the root zone cool in summer.
