Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Tiger Cycad - Cycas revoluta ‘Aurea’
The variegated form of the sago palm breaks its new fronds with gold and cream, so each annual flush emerges banded and striped before hardening to a stiff dark green skeleton. Cycas revoluta is not a palm at all but a cycad, an ancient lineage that predates flowering plants, and it grows accordingly: one flush of leaves a year and a couple of centimetres of trunk. A large variegated plant is therefore the product of many years and is priced as the slow grown thing it is.
Why the Tiger Cycad
Variegated flush: New fronds emerge marked in gold and cream, giving a distinct annual event.
Symmetry: Fronds radiate in a precise whorl, producing a formal rosette without any pruning.
Extreme durability: It tolerates heat, drought, coastal wind and neglect once established.
Trunk development: With decades the plant builds a stout patterned trunk and the value climbs with it.
Toxicity warning: All parts, especially the seeds, are highly toxic to dogs and people if eaten, so consider placement in a pet household.
Ideal Applications
Feature in a gravel bed: Its symmetry stands out against loose stone and low groundcover.
Formal entry planting: A matched pair gives symmetry that needs no clipping to maintain.
Poolside: Minimal litter and salt tolerance make it a practical choice around water.
Long term pot specimen: Slow growth means it can live in the same large container for many years.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5 to 2m centres
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2.5 to 3m centres
Best Planting Season: Spring and summer while the soil is warm
Soil & Drainage: Free draining sandy or gritty soil, never heavy or waterlogged ground
Establishment Care: Water weekly through the first warm season and then sparingly, because wet crowns and wet roots are the main cause of failure. Feed lightly in spring and remove the previous season's fronds only after the new flush has fully hardened, since cutting them early weakens the plant.
