Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Madagascar Sago Palm - Cycas thouarsii
Despite the common name this is a cycad rather than a palm, and Cycas thouarsii is the largest and fastest of the commonly available species, carrying glossy mid-green fronds up to three metres long in a broad symmetrical crown. Compared with the familiar Japanese sago it is far more generous in scale and softer in appearance, which makes it a genuine canopy-level feature rather than a low accent.
Why Madagascar Sago Palm
Frond length: Fronds are notably longer and more arching than other cycads, creating a wide flat crown.
Softer leaflets: Foliage is glossy and comparatively pliable rather than needle-stiff, so it is safer near paths.
Relative speed: Fast for a cycad, though still slow by any other measure, adding a flush of new fronds most years.
Ancient form: A prehistoric silhouette that gives a garden a distinct, primeval character.
Trunk development: Over decades it builds a thick, rough-barked trunk that lifts the crown clear of the ground.
Ideal Applications
Tropical understorey feature: Set beneath tall palms where the wide crown fills the mid layer.
Poolside sculpture: The symmetrical crown works well against water and hard paving with minimal litter.
Entry and forecourt planting: A single mature plant carries a formal entry without needing companions.
Large container culture: Its slow habit and modest root demands suit long-term pot growing.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): Not a screening plant; group at 2.5 to 3m centres
Spacing (feature/avenue): 4 to 5m to allow the full frond spread
Best Planting Season: Spring and summer, into warm soil
Soil & Drainage: Free-draining soil of moderate fertility. It tolerates dry conditions once established but will rot in heavy wet ground, and it is frost tender.
Establishment Care: Water weekly through the first warm season, then reduce as the plant settles and allow the soil to dry between waterings. Mulch away from the trunk base, feed lightly in spring with a slow release fertiliser, and note that all parts of a cycad are toxic if eaten, so site it away from areas used by dogs and small children.
