Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Hurricane Palm - Dictyosperma album var. conjugatum
The common name is earned: this palm sheds its leaflets rather than snapping its trunk in cyclonic wind, which is why Dictyosperma album has been planted so widely across tropical coastlines. It is a single-trunked feather palm with a clean crownshaft and a modest, upright crown of arching fronds, and var. conjugatum is the form originating on Round Island in the Mascarenes. In an Australian garden it delivers tropical verticality in a footprint far smaller than a royal palm.
Why Hurricane Palm
Wind resilience: Foliage is built to tear away cleanly under storm loading rather than break the crown.
Narrow footprint: A slim trunk and compact crown mean it fits beside a pool or path where a broader palm cannot.
Crownshaft: The smooth green to grey crownshaft and ringed trunk give a clean, formal line.
Self-cleaning: Spent fronds drop of their own accord, so there is little climbing or trimming.
Rarity: An uncommon palm in Australian gardens, so it stands out among the usual coastal plantings.
Ideal Applications
Coastal and cyclone-prone gardens: A sound choice in northern Queensland and other exposed tropical sites.
Pool surrounds: Self-cleaning habit and a slim trunk keep litter and bulk down.
Avenue planting: Repeated at even spacing it gives a formal palm-lined approach.
Resort and courtyard planting: Vertical accent in confined tropical courtyards.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2.5 to 3m in a close grove
Spacing (feature/avenue): 4 to 5m
Best Planting Season: Late spring through summer, into warm soil
Soil & Drainage: Rich, freely draining soil that holds some moisture. It is frost tender and needs a warm, humid position, so it is best restricted to tropical, subtropical and frost-free coastal areas.
Establishment Care: Water two to three times weekly through the first year, keeping the root zone consistently moist but never sodden. Mulch heavily out to the drip line and feed with a palm fertiliser containing magnesium and potassium in spring and mid summer.
