Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Purple Hop Bush - Dodonaea viscosa ‘Purpurea’
The purple hop bush earns its place through colour and sheer toughness. Dodonaea viscosa ‘Purpurea’ carries narrow, glossy foliage in bronze to deep purple, deepening in cold weather and in full sun, on an upright shrub that will grow in sand, clay, coastal wind or dry inland heat with almost no attention. Female plants follow with papery winged seed capsules that flush rose and copper, which is the real display rather than the tiny flowers.
Why the Purple Hop Bush
Year-round foliage colour: Purple-bronze leaves give a permanent dark tone that intensifies through winter.
Papery seed capsules: Female plants produce translucent pink to copper hop-like capsules through summer that catch the light.
Extreme site tolerance: Copes with drought, frost, salt spray, poor soil and reflected heat off walls and paving.
Fast to fill: Reaches useful screening height quickly, so it is often used as a nurse plant while slower species establish.
Takes hard pruning: Responds to cutting back by shooting from older wood, so it can be kept at any height from 1m upward.
Ideal Applications
Informal screening hedge: A close-planted row gives a dense purple screen within two to three seasons.
Coastal and exposed boundaries: One of the most reliable shrubs for wind-blasted, sandy front-line positions.
Colour contrast planting: Used behind silver and lime foliage such as westringia or lomandra for strong tonal contrast.
Roadside and streetscape mass planting: Survives on rainfall in median strips and embankments once established.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.8 to 1.2m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.5 to 2.5m
Best Planting Season: Autumn to early spring in temperate regions; the cooler months anywhere inland
Soil & Drainage: Almost any free draining soil including sand, gravel and light clay; avoid permanently wet ground
Establishment Care: Water weekly through the first summer only, then it will generally look after itself outside prolonged drought. Mulch to 75mm, tip prune in the first year to build density low down, and avoid rich fertiliser which produces soft green growth at the expense of purple tones.
