Giant Spear Lily - Doryanthes palmeri
Doryanthes palmeri is one of the great architectural plants of the Australian flora: a rosette of sword-shaped leaves two metres and more in length, from which mature plants throw an arching flower spike carrying hundreds of deep red flowers. It grows naturally on the rocky escarpments of the Queensland and New South Wales border ranges, which explains both its toughness and its need for genuine drainage. Used properly it is a single-plant statement rather than something to be repeated across a bed.
Why the Giant Spear Lily
Sculptural rosette: The symmetrical fountain of long strap leaves holds its form permanently, with no seasonal collapse.
Spectacular flower spike: Mature plants send up an arching spike carrying dense heads of deep red flowers, a genuine event in the garden calendar.
Rock and slope specialist: Evolved on cliff faces and rocky ridges, so it excels in raised beds, embankments and boulder settings.
Long lived: A well-sited plant is effectively permanent, slowly forming offsets around the parent rosette.
Bird attracting: The nectar-heavy flower heads draw honeyeaters and lorikeets in numbers.
Ideal Applications
Feature specimen in gravel or rock gardens: Set as a single focal rosette with low groundcover around it.
Embankment and batter planting: Its rocky-slope origins make it excellent on steep, free draining cuts.
Civic and commercial forecourts: Scale and durability suit large-format entry planting that receives little care.
Native statement border: Anchors a planting of grasses and low natives where a strong vertical is needed.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2.5 to 3m for a repeated mass; it is not a hedging plant
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3 to 4m
Best Planting Season: Spring and autumn; avoid planting into cold waterlogged soil
Soil & Drainage: Sharp drainage is essential; sandy or gravelly loam, raised beds or slopes, never heavy soil that holds water in winter
Establishment Care: Water fortnightly through the first two summers to settle the crown, keeping water off the centre of the rosette. Mulch with gravel or coarse bark rather than fine mulch that packs around the base, and allow generous clear space so the leaves are never crowded.
