Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Dypsis ampasindavae
Among the many Madagascan palms that have reached Australian collections, this is one of the more substantial and better proportioned. Dypsis ampasindavae is a solitary palm with a stout, ringed trunk, a well-formed crownshaft and a crown of long, gently arching pinnate fronds that hold themselves in a tidy, upright vase rather than flopping. It is a warm climate palm for tropical and subtropical gardens where an owner wants the scale of a Royal Palm with something considerably less common.
Why Dypsis ampasindavae
Robust Single Trunk: A thick, clean stem gives it real presence as a lone specimen, no clump management needed.
Elegant Crown: Long fronds arch outward from a defined crownshaft, forming a symmetrical head that photographs well against sky.
Uncommon in Cultivation: Rarely seen in Australian gardens, so it carries genuine collector value.
Wind Resilience: The stiff, well-anchored fronds hold their shape better than many soft-leaved tropical palms.
Warmth Dependent: Frost tender and humidity loving, best in the tropics and the warmer subtropics where nights stay mild.
Ideal Applications
Tropical Specimen: A single palm set in lawn or gravel where the trunk and crown can be read in full.
Poolside Framing: The vertical trunk and high crown drop little litter into water compared with fan palms.
Canopy Layer: Grouped over lower rainforest planting to build genuine vertical structure.
Estate Entry: Spaced along a wide driveway for a tropical avenue effect with an unfamiliar species.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m in a grouped planting
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 6m
Best Planting Season: Spring to early autumn, in warm soil
Soil & Drainage: Deep, rich, free draining soil with generous organic matter; steady moisture without saturation
Establishment Care: Water two or three times weekly through the first two summers, reducing once several full-size fronds have been produced. Mulch widely with composted bark clear of the trunk, shade the crown from harsh afternoon sun for the first year, and feed with a palm-specific fertiliser containing magnesium in spring and late summer.
