Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Sugar Cane Palm - Dypsis baronii
The common name comes from the stems: Dypsis baronii forms a clump of slender green canes marked with clean white rings, and they genuinely look like sugar cane. It is a clumping Madagascan palm that stays at a manageable height, holds a fine feathery crown, and never develops the massive trunk of a solitary palm, which makes it one of the more practical palms for a suburban block. It also takes far more shade than most feather palms, so it works in narrow side gardens that only get part of the day’s sun.
Why Sugar Cane Palm
Clumping Habit: Multiple canes of different ages give a layered crown at several heights from one planting.
Ringed Green Canes: The stems are a feature in their own right, particularly when uplit at night.
Restrained Height: It settles at a scale that suits courtyards and side gardens rather than towering over the roofline.
Sun or Shade: It performs in full sun on the coast and in part shade under established canopy.
Low Litter: Fronds are relatively small and shed cleanly, which matters beside pools and paving.
Ideal Applications
Poolside planting: Modest frond size and a tidy habit reduce what ends up in the water.
Narrow side gardens: The upright clumping form fits a corridor between a house and a fence.
Tropical understorey: It sits comfortably beneath larger palms and rainforest trees.
Large containers: A generous pot on a sheltered terrace holds a clump for many years.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5m to 2m centres
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3m to 4m centres
Best Planting Season: Spring and summer, once soil is warm
Soil & Drainage: Rich, free draining soil that stays evenly moist, with a thick organic mulch over the root zone. It will not tolerate hard compacted clay or extended dryness.
Establishment Care: Water two or three times a week through the first summer and keep the mulch layer topped up, because palm roots sit close to the surface and dry quickly. Feed with a palm fertiliser in spring and again in mid summer, and shelter young plants from frost and cold wind in Melbourne, Adelaide and inland gardens.
