Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Golden Barrel Cactus (Multi-Planted) - Echinocactus grusonii
Supplied as several plants grown together in one pot, this multi-planted form of Echinocactus grusonii gives the massed, boulder-like effect that a single barrel takes decades to achieve. The ribbed green bodies are wrapped in stiff golden spines that glow when backlit, and because growth is measured in a few centimetres a year, a grouping stays visually in scale with its setting for a very long time.
Why Golden Barrel Cactus
Cluster effect: Multiple heads in one pot create the look of a naturally established colony straight away.
Golden spination: Dense yellow spines catch low morning and evening light and are the whole point of the plant.
Geometry: Near-perfect spheres with regular ribbing bring a repeated form that pairs well with modern architecture.
Near-zero irrigation: Established plants need water only in prolonged drought and are actively harmed by regular watering.
Extremely slow: It will not outgrow a designed position, unlike almost every other feature plant.
Ideal Applications
Gravel and rock gardens: Set among crushed granite and boulders as the focal group in a desert-style bed.
Modern courtyard: Repeated in a shallow raised planter against rendered or off-form concrete walls.
Poolside dry planting: Handles reflected heat and requires no leaf litter management around the coping.
Feature pot: A wide, shallow bowl of barrels used as a table-height or plinth-mounted sculpture.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): Not a screening plant; for a continuous cactus bed allow 0.5 to 0.8m between groups
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1 to 1.5m between planted groups
Best Planting Season: Late spring through summer, into warm dry soil
Soil & Drainage: Extremely sharp drainage, ideally a raised bed of coarse sand and gravel. Any site where water pools, or where garden irrigation lands on the plant, will eventually rot it.
Establishment Care: Leave it dry for the first two weeks after planting, then water sparingly once a month through the first warm season only. Top-dress with gravel, never organic mulch, and site the group away from paths and play areas because the spines are rigid and genuinely painful.
