Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Broad-Leaved Silverberry - Elaeagnus macrophylla
Where a hedge has to survive salt wind, poor soil and neglect, Elaeagnus macrophylla is one of the very few evergreens that simply does not flinch. The broad rounded leaves emerge coated in silver scales and mature to dark green above with a metallic silver reverse, so the whole plant shimmers when it moves. It earns its place over photinia or viburnum on exposed coastal sites, where those plants scorch and this one thickens up.
Why Broad-Leaved Silverberry
Two tone foliage: Dark green above and silver beneath, giving a hedge far more depth than a flat green screen.
Salt and wind proof: Genuinely front line coastal, holding foliage in conditions that defoliate most hedging shrubs.
Autumn perfume: Small silvery cream bells appear in autumn and carry a sweet fragrance out of all proportion to their size.
Soil improver: Roots fix atmospheric nitrogen, so it establishes in thin, sandy and impoverished ground.
Responds to shaping: Takes hard clipping into a formal face or can be left loose and arching as an informal screen.
Ideal Applications
Coastal windbreak hedge: The first line of defence on a beachfront boundary, sheltering more tender planting behind it.
Boundary screen: A clipped face at 2 to 3m blocks sightlines from a neighbouring second storey without becoming a tree.
Wall and fence cover: Long arching shoots can be tied in to clothe a bare fence quickly.
Silver toned mixed border: Works as a structural backdrop to olives, westringia and lavender in a Mediterranean style planting.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1 to 1.5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 2.5m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or spring; autumn is preferable in warm coastal areas so roots move before summer
Soil & Drainage: Almost any free draining soil including sand and thin coastal profiles; it dislikes only heavy, permanently wet ground
Establishment Care: Water weekly for the first six months, then only in extended dry spells, as this shrub resents pampering. Mulch to 75mm and give one hard formative clip in the first spring to force branching low in the plant.
