Emerald Fig - Ficus 'Emerald'
Emerald is a compact selection of Ficus grown specifically for screening, clothed to ground level in small, thick, high-gloss leaves that hold their colour through heat and coastal exposure. Where a hedge has to be evergreen, dense at the base and genuinely quick to close a gap, it does the job with less watering than a lilly pilly and none of the psyllid pressure. It also takes shearing better than most broadleaf screens, so it can be run as a crisp formal hedge or left as a soft informal one.
Why Emerald Fig
Dense to the base: It furnishes right down to ground level rather than going leggy and bare at the bottom as it gains height.
High-gloss leaf: The thick, waxy leaf reflects light and stays clean-looking through dust, wind and salt-laden air.
Responds to shearing: Cut faces reshoot quickly and evenly, which is what allows a sharp, flat hedge line to be held long term.
Adaptable light: It performs in open sun and in the shaded side return where most screening plants thin out.
Manageable frame: At 3 to 5m this is a garden-scale fig, though like all figs it should be sited clear of drainage lines, footings and paving.
Ideal Applications
Boundary screen: Planted in a single row it builds a solid evergreen wall along a fence line to block an overlooking neighbour.
Formal clipped hedge: Held at 1.5 to 2m it makes a tight architectural hedge for defining lawns, drives and garden rooms.
Topiary and shaped forms: The small leaf and fine branching allow balls, cubes and standards to read cleanly at close range.
Large planters: It tolerates root restriction well, which makes it a reliable choice for planter boxes on terraces and rooftops.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5 to 2.5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3 to 5m
Best Planting Season: Spring to early summer
Soil & Drainage: Well-drained, moderately fertile soil; tolerates a range of soil types but dislikes waterlogging
Establishment Care: Water deeply two to three times per week for the first 8 to 12 weeks until established, then reduce to occasional deep watering during dry periods. Apply a layer of mulch around the root zone to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
