Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Coral Tree - Erythrina x sykesii
Few trees announce winter as loudly as the coral tree. Erythrina x sykesii drops its leaves and then covers bare grey branches with scarlet claw shaped flowers through the coldest months, feeding lorikeets and honeyeaters when little else is out. It is a big, fast, forgiving tree for open ground, and it needs to be sited with that scale in mind.
Why Coral Tree
Winter Colour: Scarlet flower spikes crowd leafless branches from late autumn through early spring.
Speed: Puts on height faster than almost any deciduous shade tree, even on poor or sandy ground.
Drought Hardiness: The corky, water storing trunk lets it live on rainfall alone once established.
Coastal Tolerance: Handles salt laden wind and exposed foreshore positions that kill most flowering trees.
Bird Value: Nectar rich flowers arrive in the leanest part of the year for nectar feeding birds.
Ideal Applications
Open lawn or paddock: Needs clear space for a wide, heavy limbed canopy well away from buildings.
Coastal windbreak: Planted in a line it shelters gardens behind it from salt wind.
Rural boundary: A traditional fence line and stock shade tree across eastern Australia.
Parkland colour: Used in broad public plantings where the winter display is seen from a distance.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 6-8m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 10-12m
Best Planting Season: Spring and early summer, once frost risk has passed
Soil & Drainage: Undemanding across sand, loam and clay, tolerant of salt and low fertility, wants reasonable drainage
Establishment Care: Water fortnightly through the first summer only, as it needs very little afterwards. Prune structurally while young to limit long horizontal limbs, and keep it well clear of paving, pipes, pools and structures because the timber is brittle and the roots run near the surface.
