Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Bangalay - Eucalyptus botryoides
Bangalay is the dense-crowned shade gum of the south-eastern coastal strip, holding foliage low and thick where most eucalypts thin out under salt wind. Eucalyptus botryoides carries rough, furrowed bark up the trunk and well into the main limbs before running smooth and pale on the upper branches, and it will sit contentedly in the heavy, periodically waterlogged sands behind a dune. It is chosen over spotted gum or blackbutt when the brief calls for genuine canopy density and shelter rather than a high, filtered head.
Why Bangalay
Salt Wind Tolerance: One of the few large eucalypts that keeps a full crown within a few hundred metres of open surf.
Canopy Density: Broad, dark green, thick-textured leaves cast heavy shade rather than the dappled light typical of the genus.
Wet Ground Tolerance: Handles seasonally waterlogged sands and clay flats that would kill most dry-country gums.
Nectar Value: Clusters of creamy flowers draw lorikeets, honeyeaters and native bees through summer and autumn.
Bark Character: The persistent grey fibrous bark on the trunk and limbs gives a solid, sculptural presence in winter light.
Ideal Applications
Coastal Windbreak: Planted in staggered rows it filters salt-laden southerlies and shelters gardens or stock behind it.
Acreage Shade Tree: A single mature specimen throws a wide pool of shade over paddock, dam edge or house yard.
Park and Avenue Planting: Even, rounded crowns line up well along broad verges where there is room for a full-sized tree.
Site Stabilisation: Extensive roots bind loose coastal sands and batters on revegetation and rehabilitation sites.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 8 to 12m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 15 to 20m
Best Planting Season: Autumn through to early spring in coastal districts, avoiding the peak of summer heat
Soil & Drainage: Very adaptable across coastal sands, sandy loams and clay loams, slightly acidic to neutral, and tolerant of periodic waterlogging
Establishment Care: Water deeply once or twice a week through the first two summers, tapering off as the root plate spreads beyond the planting hole. Keep a 100mm layer of coarse mulch over the root zone but clear of the trunk collar, and stake only loosely so the stem can flex and thicken.
