Silver Dollar Gum - Eucalyptus cinerea
The round silver blue juvenile leaves that florists buy by the bunch stay on this gum far longer than on most eucalypts, which is exactly why it is planted. Eucalyptus cinerea forms a modest tree with fibrous reddish brown bark and a spreading crown of pale foliage that reads almost grey from a distance, giving colour contrast that few Australian trees offer. It grows quickly, handles frost and dry conditions, and stays small enough for a suburban block, unlike most of the gums people wish they could plant.
Why Silver Dollar Gum
Silver Juvenile Foliage: Rounded blue grey leaves are retained on the tree for years, and coppicing keeps them coming indefinitely.
Manageable Size: A mature height well under that of most gums makes it usable in ordinary gardens and street verges.
Fast Establishment: Rapid early growth means real screening and colour within a few seasons.
Frost and Drought Hardy: It comes from the cold tablelands, so heavy frost and dry summers are both within its range.
Cut Foliage: The stems are the standard silver filler in florist work and can be harvested from the garden.
Ideal Applications
Colour Contrast Planting: Set against dark green natives the silver canopy separates cleanly.
Rural Windbreaks: Rows on acreage give fast shelter with genuine drought tolerance.
Coppiced Foliage Beds: Cut hard every few years it stays shrubby and produces a constant supply of round juvenile leaves.
Habitat and Bird Gardens: Creamy spring flowers draw nectar feeding birds and insects.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m for a windbreak row
Spacing (feature/avenue): 6 to 8m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or spring in temperate districts, avoiding midwinter in frost hollows for very young plants
Soil & Drainage: Free draining soil of moderate fertility; it tolerates poor and gravelly ground but not permanent wet
Establishment Care: Water weekly through the first summer only, since eucalypts root fast and over watering produces weak top heavy growth. Mulch away from the trunk, stake low and loosely if at all, and site the tree a sensible distance from buildings and services as you would with any gum.
