Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Thin-Leaved Stringybark - Eucalyptus eugenioides
Eucalyptus eugenioides is a hardy stringybark of the Sydney basin and the NSW coastal ranges, forming a straight trunk with fibrous stringy bark and a fairly open crown. It is planted where a genuine local eucalypt is wanted for habitat, revegetation or large scale rural landscaping rather than for a manicured garden effect. Growth is quick on reasonable soil, and it copes with the sandy and clay loams that dominate the eastern seaboard.
Why Thin-Leaved Stringybark
Characteristic Bark: Deeply fibrous stringy bark runs the full height of the trunk and out along the limbs.
Local Provenance: Indigenous to much of coastal and near coastal New South Wales, so it satisfies local planting schedules.
Rapid Height: Puts on height quickly in its early years, closing a gap in a shelterbelt fast.
Summer Nectar: White flowers in summer feed lorikeets, honeyeaters and bees.
Soil Adaptability: Grows on shale, sandstone derived and clay loam soils without special preparation.
Ideal Applications
Habitat and Revegetation: A standard component of coastal woodland restoration and offset planting.
Rural Shelterbelt: Massed in rows to shelter paddocks, dams and farm buildings from wind.
Large Property Canopy: Gives a genuine forest scale canopy on acreage where space is not a constraint.
Parkland and Reserve Planting: Used in council and developer landscapes to reinstate a native overstorey.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 4 to 6m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 10 to 15m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or early spring so roots establish before summer heat
Soil & Drainage: Well drained sandy to clay loam, moderately acid to neutral, avoids permanently wet ground
Establishment Care: Water fortnightly and deeply for the first two summers rather than little and often, which encourages a shallow root plate. Stake only if the site is exposed, remove ties within twelve months, and keep grass and weeds off a metre wide circle around the trunk.
