Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Purple Mallee - Eucalyptus lansdowneana subsp. albopurpurea
This is the South Australian coastal form of the purple flowered mallee, and it produces some of the largest and deepest coloured flowers of any eucalypt at garden scale. Eucalyptus lansdowneana subsp. albopurpurea grows as a mallee or small tree with smooth shedding grey bark, and flowers in shades from deep magenta pink through purple red, occasionally white, across the cooler months. It is planted where an owner wants a genuine native tree that flowers with the intensity of an exotic.
Why Purple Mallee
Rare flower colour: Deep pink to purple red blooms are unusual in the genus and hold well through autumn, winter and into spring.
Compact scale: A mallee habit keeps it within suburban proportions rather than the 20m of a typical gum.
Smooth bark: Grey to pinkish bark sheds in ribbons to leave a clean, pale multi stemmed trunk structure.
Coastal hardiness: Its natural range on Kangaroo Island and the Eyre Peninsula means it copes with salt wind and thin calcareous soils.
Bird value: Nectar heavy flowers over winter attract honeyeaters and lorikeets.
Ideal Applications
Small feature tree: Sized for a suburban front garden where a full eucalypt would be out of scale.
Dry coastal planting: Suits exposed South Australian and Western Australian gardens on limestone influenced sand.
Native flowering group: Planted in threes it gives a long winter colour block with correas and eremophilas beneath.
Verge and nature strip: Multi stemmed and modest in height, it works where overhead services rule out larger trees.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2.5 to 3.5m for an informal native barrier
Spacing (feature/avenue): 4 to 6m
Best Planting Season: Autumn to early winter in Mediterranean climates; early spring where frosts are hard
Soil & Drainage: Free draining sandy or gravelly soil, tolerant of alkaline and limestone profiles; it fails in heavy wet clay
Establishment Care: Water fortnightly through the first summer, deeply rather than often, then leave it to the rainfall. Use coarse mineral mulch instead of rich compost and avoid high phosphorus fertiliser entirely.
