Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Bushy Yate - Eucalyptus lehmannii
Bushy yate is the eucalypt to reach for when the requirement is a dense, wind proof, evergreen barrier rather than a shade tree. Eucalyptus lehmannii branches almost from ground level and holds foliage right down the stem, which is unusual in the genus and makes it a genuine screening plant. It is also one of the strangest gums in flower, with fused clusters of long horned buds opening to greenish yellow brushes and hardening into a single woody fruit head.
Why Bushy Yate
Foliage to the ground: Unlike most eucalypts it stays clothed at the base, giving a solid screen without a bare leg.
Coastal exposure: Bred by its south coast Western Australian origin to handle salt spray and constant onshore wind.
Curious flowers: Clusters of horn like buds fuse together and open to yellow green brushes from autumn through spring.
Woody seed heads: The fused fruit clusters are sculptural and popular in dried arrangements.
Rapid cover: It fills a windbreak line faster than almost any other evergreen of comparable toughness.
Ideal Applications
Farm and rural windbreak: A single row gives shelter to paddocks, sheds and orchards within a few seasons.
Coastal boundary screen: Holds a dense face on exposed sandy blocks where hedging shrubs burn off.
Dust and noise buffer: The dense low branching structure filters wind borne dust along road frontages.
Habitat thicket: Small birds nest readily in the tight interior branching.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2 to 3m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 4 to 5m
Best Planting Season: Autumn to early winter in southern Australia; spring in frost prone inland sites
Soil & Drainage: Sandy, gravelly or loamy soils with free drainage; tolerant of alkaline coastal sand but not of prolonged waterlogging
Establishment Care: Water fortnightly through the first summer to get the taproot down, then withdraw irrigation entirely. Tip prune in the first two years to thicken the base, and keep the plant clear of remnant bushland since it seeds freely outside its home range.
