Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Eucalyptus macrocarpa x pyriformis
Two of Western Australia's most spectacular mallees stand behind this cross: mottlecah and the pear fruited mallee. Eucalyptus macrocarpa x pyriformis inherits the thick, powder coated silver grey leaves and the oversized flowers, borne singly or in small groups along sprawling stems, followed by heavy woody gum nuts that persist for years. It is a low, spreading mallee rather than an upright tree, and it demands the same dry, sharply drained conditions as both parents.
Why This Hybrid Mallee
Flower Size: Among the largest blossoms of any eucalypt, a mass of stamens several centimetres across.
Silver Foliage: Broad grey leaves coated in white wax stay striking even out of flower.
Sprawling Habit: Stems lean and arch outward rather than forming a trunk, giving a low sculptural shape.
Woody Gum Nuts: Large ribbed capsules hang on the branches long after flowering.
Aridity Preference: Genuinely at home on dry sandplain country where most ornamentals fail.
Ideal Applications
Dry Gravel Garden: Ideal among crushed rock, spinifex and other sandplain natives.
Mediterranean Climate Feature: Best suited to Perth, Adelaide and dry inland districts.
Bird Attracting Planting: Large nectar rich flowers draw honeyeaters throughout the flowering period.
Raised Mound or Embankment: Elevated planting solves the drainage problem on heavier soils.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2 to 3m, though it is not a screening plant
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3 to 4m
Best Planting Season: Autumn in Mediterranean climate zones, spring where winters are cold and wet
Soil & Drainage: Deep sand or gravel with extremely sharp drainage, and on the humid east coast a raised mound with no summer irrigation
Establishment Care: Water sparingly, deeply and infrequently through the first summer only, then stop entirely. Use a gravel mulch rather than organic material, keep phosphorus well away from the root zone and do not crowd it with neighbouring plants.
