Overview & Specifications

Strawberry Gum - Eucalyptus olida
Crush a leaf of Strawberry Gum and the scent is unmistakable, a sweet berry and passionfruit aroma quite unlike the medicinal note of most eucalypts. Eucalyptus olida is a rare tree from a small area of the New England tablelands in northern New South Wales, and its leaves are harvested commercially as a native bushfood spice. In the garden it is a well proportioned medium tree with smooth shedding bark in tan and grey, narrow glossy leaves and cream flowers, and it is one of the few eucalypts grown as much for scent and flavour as for form.
Why Strawberry Gum
Aromatic Foliage: The leaves carry a high concentration of methyl cinnamate, producing a genuine strawberry and passionfruit fragrance when crushed or brewed.
Bushfood Harvest: Dried and ground leaf is a recognised native spice used in baking, sauces and tea, so the tree earns its place productively.
Manageable Size: At eight to fifteen metres it fits a large garden or small acreage without the risk that comes with a forest gum.
Smooth Shedding Bark: Bark peels in patches to reveal fresh tan, cream and grey tones through the warmer months.
Cold Tolerance: Coming from tableland country above 1,000 metres it is genuinely frost hardy in southern Australian conditions.
Ideal Applications
Bushfood Garden: Planted alongside lemon myrtle, mountain pepper and native finger lime as a productive native species.
Medium Shade Tree: Gives high dappled shade over a lawn or seating area without overwhelming a suburban block.
Conservation Planting: Its restricted natural range makes cultivated plantings valuable for the species beyond their garden use.
Small Farm Windbreak: Mixes well into a mixed species shelterbelt where a moderate final height is wanted.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 8 to 10m
Best Planting Season: Spring and autumn. In cold districts plant in spring so the young tree hardens before its first heavy frost.
Soil & Drainage: Well drained loams and sandy loams, acid to neutral, with moderate fertility. It will not accept waterlogging, and low phosphorus fertiliser only.
Establishment Care: Water deeply every seven to ten days through the first two summers to build the root system, then reduce to occasional deep soaks in extended dry weather. Mulch to 75mm kept clear of the trunk, and avoid harvesting leaf until the tree is well established in its third season.
