Snow Gum - Eucalyptus pauciflora
The bark is what people plant it for. Eucalyptus pauciflora sheds in long ribbons to leave a trunk streaked in white, grey, olive and copper, and on older trees the branches take on a leaning, twisted form that no other eucalypt matches. It comes from the tablelands and subalpine country of south eastern Australia, so it is one of the toughest cold climate trees available, shrugging off hard frost and snow load. In a garden it stays modest in size and lets plenty of light through to whatever grows beneath.
Why Snow Gum
Trunk Colour: Mottled white, silver, olive and coppery streaking that changes through the year as the bark sheds.
Sculptural Habit: Naturally leaning, multi branched growth that reads as a mature landscape feature within a decade.
Extreme Cold Tolerance: Native to snow country, handling severe frost and snow that would kill most ornamental trees.
Open Canopy: Thick leathery leaves are held sparsely, so grass and understorey planting continue beneath it.
Modest Scale: Considerably smaller than most eucalypts, keeping it usable on a suburban block in cool districts.
Ideal Applications
Cool Climate Feature Tree: A single specimen where the trunk can be seen and lit at night.
Highland Gardens: A natural fit for gardens in the Snowy Mountains, central Tasmania and the Victorian high country.
Grouped Grove: Planted in threes or fives to build a stand of contrasting trunks.
Native Framework: Used as the canopy layer over grasses and low shrubs in an indigenous style garden.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m for a grove
Spacing (feature/avenue): 6 to 8m
Best Planting Season: Spring in cold districts, once the worst frosts have passed
Soil & Drainage: Prefers well drained soils but tolerates cold heavy ground and winter wet, and it performs poorly in hot humid coastal summers
Establishment Care: Water deeply once a week through the first summer and then only in prolonged dry spells. Keep grass cleared from the base for the first two years, avoid staking too rigidly so the trunk develops taper and strength, and let the natural leaning habit develop rather than pruning it out.
