Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Red Box - Eucalyptus polyanthemos
Red box is the eucalypt with the coin shaped leaves, and the reason florists buy it by the bunch. Eucalyptus polyanthemos holds rounded blue grey juvenile foliage on young growth, maturing to a longer leaf on a shapely, densely crowned tree with rough grey box bark on the lower trunk. It comes from the dry inland slopes of Victoria and New South Wales, which means it copes with shallow soil, drought and hard frost, and it makes one of the better shade trees for a hot, dry country garden.
Why Red Box
Foliage Colour: Rounded silver blue leaves give the whole canopy a distinctly grey cast, unusual among shade eucalypts.
Cut Foliage Value: The juvenile growth is a staple in the Australian cut flower trade and can be harvested from garden trees.
Dense Crown: Carries a fuller, more shading canopy than most inland eucalypts.
Dry Country Toughness: Native to poor, shallow, well drained soils on dry slopes, so drought and heat are not a problem.
Frost Hardiness: Handles hard inland frosts once established.
Ideal Applications
Rural Shade Tree: A dependable shade canopy for hot, dry acreage in inland Victoria, New South Wales and the ACT.
Shelterbelt Component: Mixed through farm windbreaks for its dense crown and drought endurance.
Cut Foliage Block: Coppiced and cut regularly to keep producing juvenile silver foliage.
Native Avenue: Planted along country driveways where a grey toned canopy is wanted.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 5 to 6m in a shelterbelt
Spacing (feature/avenue): 8 to 10m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or early spring
Soil & Drainage: Well drained, low fertility soils including shallow stony ground, and it will not tolerate heavy soils that stay wet through winter
Establishment Care: Water fortnightly through the first summer, deeply rather than often, then leave the tree to its own devices. Keep a weed free ring around the base for two years and avoid phosphorus rich fertilisers.
