Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Narrow Leaved Peppermint - Eucalyptus radiata
Run a hand through the canopy of Eucalyptus radiata and the reason for the common name is obvious: the fine, narrow leaves are loaded with a clean peppermint-scented oil, and it is the species behind much of the eucalyptus oil produced in south eastern Australia. The tree is a graceful, medium to tall forest eucalypt with finely fibrous grey bark on the trunk, a drooping crown of pale green foliage and masses of small white flowers through summer. It is hardy, quick and well suited to cold tableland country.
Why Narrow Leaved Peppermint
Foliage Aroma: Leaves are strongly peppermint-scented, and the crushed foliage perfumes the surrounding air on hot days.
Fine Texture: Narrow drooping leaves give a soft, almost willowy canopy rather than a coarse one.
Frost Hardiness: It comes from cold tableland and montane country and handles hard frost without damage.
Summer Flowering: Dense clusters of small white flowers over summer support bees and produce a distinctive honey.
Site Tolerance: Grows on a wide range of soils including poorer, shallow and seasonally damp ground.
Ideal Applications
Rural shelterbelt: Fast, hardy rows for wind protection on cold, exposed southern properties.
Tableland revegetation: A local canopy species for restoration work through the highlands of Victoria and New South Wales.
Large property screen: Quick evergreen height to block a distant view on acreage.
Bee and habitat planting: A significant summer nectar source and a common nesting tree.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 5 to 7m in a shelter row
Spacing (feature/avenue): 10 to 12m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or spring
Soil & Drainage: Adaptable across loam, clay loam and shallow soils, prefers reasonable drainage, tolerates cold wet winters but not permanent waterlogging
Establishment Care: A deep soak every week or two through the first summer is enough, after which the tree looks after itself in most southern districts. Keep grass off the root zone for the first two seasons and allow ample room, as this is a full-sized forest tree and not a garden ornamental.
