Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Matong Swamp Mahogany - Eucalyptus robusta ‘Matong’
Swamp mahogany is the eucalypt that grows where the ground stays wet. Eucalyptus robusta occurs naturally in coastal swamps and behind dunes from southern New South Wales into Queensland, and it will hold and thrive in seasonally waterlogged clay that kills most other trees planted for shade or shelter. ‘Matong’ is offered as a named selection of that species. Its value on a property is straightforward: fast height, thick fibrous red brown bark, dense shade, and a heavy autumn to winter nectar flow that pulls in flying foxes, lorikeets and honeyeaters when little else is flowering.
Why Matong Swamp Mahogany
Wet Ground Tolerance: Handles periodically waterlogged and heavy soils that will drown most other shade or shelter trees.
Coastal Resilience: Tolerates salt laden wind, which makes it a reliable back line in a coastal windbreak.
Winter Nectar: Cream flowers from autumn into winter are a recognised food source for nectar feeding birds and bats at a lean time of year.
Rate of Cover: Fast early growth gives usable height and canopy within a few seasons rather than a decade.
Bark and Habitat: Thick, soft, fibrous red brown bark and a dense crown that supports hollows and nesting as the tree ages.
Ideal Applications
Low Lying Paddock: The tree of choice for the damp corner of a property where drainage cannot easily be improved.
Coastal Windbreak: Planted in rows behind a front line of shrubs it takes the sting out of a salt wind.
Acreage Shade: A single mature tree throws enough shade for stock or for a yard, well away from buildings.
Revegetation and Habitat: A core species in coastal wet forest restoration along the eastern seaboard.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 5 to 8m in a windbreak or screening row.
Spacing (feature/avenue): 10 to 15m, and set back at least 15m from houses, sheds and services.
Best Planting Season: Autumn through spring in frost free coastal areas, spring where light frosts occur.
Soil & Drainage: Very adaptable. Heavy, wet, sandy and saline soils are all tolerated, and it prefers soils that stay moist rather than drying hard.
Establishment Care: Water fortnightly through the first year, less if the site is naturally damp. Use a short stake and let the stem flex so it thickens properly, and prune early to a single dominant leader so the mature tree does not carry a weak fork.
