Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Candlebark - Eucalyptus rubida
Candlebark is the cold country gum, native to the tablelands and high plains of Victoria, New South Wales and Tasmania and hardy in the coldest sites in the country. Eucalyptus rubida sheds to a clean white trunk that develops red to pink blotches through late summer and autumn, which is where the name comes from, and young plants carry rounded blue grey juvenile leaves. It is fast, tough, and unbothered by heavy frost, snow or waterlogged winter clay.
Why Candlebark
Blotched White Trunk: The smooth white bark stains red and pink through late summer, giving the tree its best season after flowering has finished.
Extreme Cold Hardiness: Handles severe frost and settled snow, making it one of the few gums for alpine and tableland gardens.
Juvenile Foliage: Rounded blue grey leaves on young growth are decorative in their own right and popular for cutting.
Winter Wet Tolerance: Accepts cold heavy clay that stays saturated through winter, a common problem soil in highland districts.
Rapid Establishment: Grows away quickly, which matters on exposed sites needing shelter sooner rather than later.
Ideal Applications
Cold Climate Windbreak: Fast, wind firm shelter for tableland and high country properties.
Highland Gardens: Suited to the Southern Highlands, the Victorian ranges, Tasmania and the ACT.
Winter Trunk Feature: Grouped in threes on a lawn, the white trunks carry the garden through winter.
Frost Hollow Revegetation: One of the more dependable species for cold, wet, low-lying ground.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 6 to 8m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 10 to 14m
Best Planting Season: Spring in cold districts, once the worst frosts have passed
Soil & Drainage: Adaptable across clay loam, loam and gravelly soils, and it accepts winter wet ground better than most eucalypts. Best growth comes on deeper moisture-retentive profiles
Establishment Care: Water every two weeks through the first summer, then rely on rainfall in most highland districts. Mulch a wide ring clear of the trunk and protect very young plants with a tree guard where frost heave or rabbits are an issue.
