Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Coast Manna Gum - Eucalyptus viminalis subsp. pryoriana
The coastal subspecies of the manna gum is a smaller, tougher and more spreading tree than the tall inland form of Eucalyptus viminalis, adapted to the sandy soils and salt-laden winds of southern coastal Victoria and adjacent New South Wales. It carries rough greyish bark on the lower trunk with smooth ribboning bark above, and a wide open crown of narrow green leaves. It is planted where a genuinely local, koala-supporting eucalypt is wanted on exposed sandy ground.
Why the Coast Manna Gum
Coastal adaptation: Handles sandy, low-fertility soils and salt wind that inland eucalypts will not tolerate.
Manageable scale: Considerably shorter and broader than the inland manna gum, which makes it usable on smaller rural blocks.
Wildlife food tree: A recognised koala browse species and a strong nectar source for birds and insects.
Ribbon bark: Long ribbons of shed bark hanging from the upper limbs give it real character in a naturalistic planting.
Quick canopy: Fast early growth means shade and shelter within a handful of seasons.
Ideal Applications
Coastal revegetation: The correct provenance choice for restoring sandy coastal woodland in southern Victoria.
Shelterbelts on sandy country: Rows of it break salt wind across paddocks and coastal properties.
Habitat and wildlife corridors: Planted in groups to link remnant vegetation and support browsing fauna.
Large garden shade tree: Suitable for acreage where a spreading open-crowned native is wanted well clear of buildings.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 4 to 6m in a shelterbelt row
Spacing (feature/avenue): 8 to 12m, and set well back from buildings and services
Best Planting Season: Autumn to early spring, taking advantage of winter rainfall
Soil & Drainage: Sandy to sandy-loam soils with free drainage; tolerates low fertility and short seasonal wetness
Establishment Care: Water fortnightly through the first two summers, deeply rather than often, then leave it to rainfall. Mulch broadly, control grass competition around the root plate for the first two years, and use a tree guard on exposed coastal sites to reduce wind rock while roots take hold.
