Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Green Rocket Japanese Spindle - Euonymus japonicus ‘Green Rocket’
This is a narrow answer to a narrow problem. Euonymus japonicus ‘Green Rocket’ grows as a tight upright column of glossy dark green foliage roughly 2 to 3m tall but under a metre wide, so it screens a side passage, a neighbour's window or a service area in a strip of ground where a conventional hedge simply will not fit. It clips well but holds its shape largely on its own.
Why Green Rocket
Columnar Habit: Naturally upright and narrow, so a screen can be built in a garden bed only 600 to 800mm deep.
Leaf Quality: Small, thick, high gloss leaves that stay clean and dark right through winter.
Clipping Tolerance: It takes shearing readily and reshoots from old wood, which makes it forgiving if a hedge is allowed to run away.
Coastal and Wind Hardiness: Tolerates salt laden wind and exposed positions better than most formal hedging plants.
Climate Range: Reliable from Perth and Adelaide through Melbourne, Sydney and the tablelands, handling both frost and summer heat.
Ideal Applications
Side Passage Screening: The standard solution for the metre wide strip between two houses where privacy is needed.
Narrow Formal Hedge: Planted in a line it forms a crisp green wall with minimal encroachment onto paths or driveways.
Green Pillars and Punctuation: Single plants used as vertical accents in a formal garden or flanking steps and gates.
Planter Box Screening: Suits raised troughs and rooftop planters where root volume and width are both restricted.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.5 to 0.6m for a solid hedge, 0.4m for the fastest closure
Spacing (feature/avenue): 0.9 to 1.2m for separated pillars
Best Planting Season: Autumn or spring in most districts, avoiding midsummer
Soil & Drainage: Adaptable to most soils including clay and sand, provided drainage is reasonable; pH 6 to 7.5
Establishment Care: Water two to three times a week through the first summer so the hedge line establishes evenly, since a single stressed plant leaves a permanent gap. Feed in spring and autumn, mulch to 75mm, and keep air moving around the plants because still, humid, shaded conditions encourage powdery mildew and scale.
