Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Candelabra Tree - Euphorbia ingens
Few plants read as architecture the way this one does. Euphorbia ingens builds a solid columnar trunk topped by tiers of upswept, four-angled green stems, holding its shape for decades without pruning and without producing a single lasting leaf. Designers reach for it over a cactus or a tall agave when a dry bed needs real vertical mass and a silhouette that still works as a shadow on a rendered wall at night.
Why Candelabra Tree
Sculptural Silhouette: The branching is naturally symmetrical and tiered, so it looks composed from every angle without shaping.
Genuine Drought Hardiness: Water is stored in the stems, and established plants in free-draining ground can go months on rainfall alone.
Reflected Heat: It shrugs off the heat load beside paving, rendered walls and gravel where most feature plants scorch.
Slow and Predictable: Growth is measured in centimetres a year, so it will not outgrow a courtyard the way a fast tree does.
Caustic Sap: The white latex is a strong skin and eye irritant, so site it clear of play areas and wear gloves and eye protection if you ever cut it.
Ideal Applications
Dry Gravel Gardens: Anchors a succulent and grass planting that receives little or no irrigation.
Poolside and Paved Courtyards: Drops no leaf litter and copes with radiated heat off tiles and coping.
Architectural Entries: A single specimen against a plain wall gives a strong vertical without soft mass.
Large Containers: Suits deep pots with gritty mix where root volume can be kept controlled.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2-3m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 4-5m
Best Planting Season: Spring to early summer, into warm soil
Soil & Drainage: Sharp, gritty and fast draining. On clay, plant into a raised mound or a bed lifted 300mm above grade, and avoid any position that collects run-off.
Establishment Care: Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry right out between soaks, and never irrigate a cold wet soil in winter. Mulch with gravel or coarse scoria rather than organic mulch, keeping it clear of the trunk base to prevent collar rot.
