Overview & Specifications

Flash Indian Laurel Fig (Standard) - Ficus microcarpa ‘Flash’
Trained as a standard, this fig is a clear straight trunk topped with a clipped rounded head of small glossy dark green leaves, which is a very different plant from the same cultivar grown as a hedge. Ficus microcarpa ‘Flash’ is favoured for that work because it is dense, small-leaved and fast to refill after clipping, so the head recovers its shape quickly between trims. Designers use standards in pairs and rows where a lollipop form is wanted at a fixed height, with clear space beneath the canopy for planting or paving.
Why Flash Indian Laurel Fig
Trained standard form: A clear single trunk with a shaped ball head, giving formal repetition that a naturally grown plant cannot match.
Rapid recovery: Refills after clipping faster than most evergreens, so the head stays tight with two or three trims a year.
Fine leaf: Small glossy leaves produce a smooth clipped surface rather than a chopped, ragged face.
Heat and humidity tolerance: Thrives in Queensland and northern New South Wales summers where cooler climate topiary subjects suffer.
Clean canopy: Dense evergreen cover holds its colour through the year without a leafless period.
Ideal Applications
Formal entry pair: Two matched standards flanking a doorway, gate or driveway entrance.
Pleached style row: Planted in a line at even spacing above a wall or fence to lift privacy at head height.
Poolside and terrace pots: Grown in large containers where the clear trunk keeps sight lines open.
Courtyard structure: Repeated through a paved courtyard to give rhythm and green mass with a small ground footprint.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5 to 2m for a continuous row of heads
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2.5 to 3m
Best Planting Season: Spring through early autumn into warm soil, avoiding frost-prone periods
Soil & Drainage: Adaptable to most free draining soils. Note that fig roots are strong and invasive, so keep plantings well away from pipes, paving, pools and footings, or install a root barrier
Establishment Care: Water two or three times weekly for the first summer to hold the head in full leaf, as stress causes leaf drop. Mulch to 75mm clear of the trunk, keep the trunk staked and free of shoots, and clip the head lightly two or three times a year rather than hard once.
