Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Variegated Flash Fig - Ficus microcarpa ‘Flash Variegated’
This is the variegated sport of the well known ‘Flash’ fig, carrying the same small glossy leaf and dense habit but with irregular cream to pale green margins and marbling across the foliage. Ficus microcarpa ‘Flash Variegated’ grows somewhat more slowly and stays more compact than the plain green form, because variegated tissue produces less energy, and that slower rate is often an advantage in a clipped screen. It is chosen where a fig hedge needs to lighten a dark corner rather than deepen it.
Why Variegated Flash Fig
Light-toned foliage: Cream and pale green variegation brightens shaded walls, narrow side gardens and dark fence lines.
Controlled vigour: Slower than the green form, so a clipped screen holds its shape between trims for longer.
Dense screening: Still branches freely and knits into a solid evergreen face when planted in a row.
Warm climate reliability: Handles subtropical humidity, heat and coastal conditions along the eastern seaboard.
Container suitability: The reduced vigour makes it more manageable in large pots and built planters than most figs.
Ideal Applications
Feature hedge: A clipped screen used deliberately as a light-coloured backdrop to darker planting.
Narrow side passage: Planted in a slim bed between buildings where reflected light is limited.
Large planters: Grown in raised boxes on terraces and rooftops within reach of regular watering.
Topiary and shaped forms: Clipped into cones, balls and blocks where the variegation emphasises the geometry.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.8 to 1.2m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 2.5m
Best Planting Season: Spring and summer into warm soil, in frost free or nearly frost free positions
Soil & Drainage: Free draining soil of reasonable fertility. Fig roots are vigorous, so keep well clear of drains, paving and structures or install a root barrier
Establishment Care: Water two or three times weekly through the first summer, since variegated foliage scorches more readily under water stress. Mulch to 75mm away from the trunks and position the plant out of the harshest afternoon sun in hot inland districts to protect the pale leaf margins.
