Upright Hill’s Weeping Fig - Ficus microcarpa var. hillii
This is the plant behind most of the tall, dark, dead flat clipped hedges in Sydney and Brisbane, and the upright selection is narrower and more columnar than the spreading species form. Ficus microcarpa var. hillii combines glossy evergreen foliage, very fast growth and an unusual willingness to be sheared into hard geometric shapes, which is why designers keep specifying it. The trade off is a strong, water seeking root system, so it needs to be sited with pipes, paving, pools and footings in mind rather than planted on impulse.
Why Upright Hill’s Fig
Columnar Habit: The upright form holds a narrow profile, so a screen can sit close to a boundary.
Speed: It closes a screening gap faster than almost any other evergreen of comparable quality.
Glossy Dark Foliage: Dense, small, waxy leaves give a deep green wall that reads as solid mass.
Shears Cleanly: It accepts hard shaping into hedges, blocks and pleached panels and reshoots readily from old wood.
Urban Tolerance: It copes with heat, reflected light, pollution and restricted root runs in built environments.
Ideal Applications
Tall clipped hedge: A row held at three to five metres gives complete privacy on a suburban boundary.
Pleached or block screen: It is the standard choice for a raised trained panel above a fence line.
Property boundary screening: On acreage it forms a fast, dense, evergreen edge along a driveway or fence.
Large scale shade tree: Left unpruned on a big site it develops into a broad spreading shade tree.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1m to 1.5m centres for a tight hedge
Spacing (feature/avenue): 6m to 8m centres
Best Planting Season: Spring through to early autumn in warm soil
Soil & Drainage: Adaptable to most free draining soils and tolerant of poor ground once established. Plant at least 5m to 8m from drains, sewer lines, pool shells, paving and building footings, and further where a full sized tree is intended.
Establishment Care: Water two or three times a week through the first summer to build the dense growth a hedge depends on, then taper off as the roots spread. Mulch the full length of the planting line, feed in spring and again in late summer, and begin light tip pruning early to force branching low down rather than waiting for height.
