Sizes shown are the sizes we currently source in this species. If you need larger specimens, project quantities or a size not listed, our sourcing team can look for it through our national supplier network. We confirm your exact stock with you on the booking call before anything ships.

Firescreen Lilly Pilly - Syzygium australe 'Firescreen'
Firescreen is a narrow, upright form of Syzygium australe selected for screening on tight boundaries, where the brief is height without width. New growth flushes bright bronze-red against mature dark green foliage, so a run of it reads as a moving band of colour several times a year rather than a flat green wall. Like the modern Australian bred lilly pillies it carries strong resistance to psyllid, which is the single reason older seedling lilly pilly hedges failed.
Why Firescreen Lilly Pilly
Narrow footprint: A mature width of 1.5 to 2.5m lets it screen to 5m in a garden bed barely a metre deep.
Coloured new growth: Each flush breaks bronze-red and holds the colour for weeks before hardening to deep green.
Psyllid resistance: Bred for resistance to the pimple psyllid that pits and distorts the leaves of unimproved lilly pilly.
Fast cover: Vigorous growth closes gaps between plants quickly, which matters when the point of the planting is privacy.
Australian native: An east coast native that supports nectar feeding birds when the white brush flowers open in spring.
Ideal Applications
Privacy screen: Run in a single row along a fence to block a two storey outlook where there is no room for a wide hedge.
Clipped formal hedge: Trimmed twice a year it holds a flat face and sharp corners for a structured garden layout.
Side return planting: The upright habit suits the narrow strip between a house wall and a boundary fence.
Pool screening: Evergreen cover with fine leaf litter that helps enclose a pool area without constant skimming.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1 to 1.5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3 to 4m
Best Planting Season: Spring or autumn
Soil & Drainage: Well-drained to moderately moist soils; tolerates a range of soil types including clay and loam; avoid waterlogged conditions
Establishment Care: Water deeply two to three times per week for the first 8 to 12 weeks until established, then reduce to occasional deep watering during dry periods. Apply a layer of mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
