Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Bennett’s Ash - Flindersia bennettiana
Bennett's ash is one of the best Australian rainforest trees for street and avenue work: straight trunked, upright while young, and evergreen with glossy pinnate foliage that stays clean through summer. Flindersia bennettiana grows naturally in the subtropical rainforests of northern New South Wales and southern Queensland, and in cultivation it develops a broad, high crown that gives genuine shade. Woody knobbly seed capsules follow the creamy flowers.
Why Bennett’s Ash
Form: A straight central trunk and a symmetrical crown, so it lifts easily for clearance over footpaths and driveways.
Foliage: Glossy dark green pinnate leaves, evergreen and dense enough to cast real shade.
Growth: Establishes and grows quickly for a rainforest tree, without the brittle timber of many fast growers.
Adaptability: Handles full sun, coastal conditions and a range of soils once past establishment.
Wildlife: Creamy flowers draw native bees and other insects through spring and early summer.
Ideal Applications
Street and avenue: Widely specified in Sydney, Brisbane and coastal councils for its uniform, clean habit.
Large garden shade: A single tree covers a lawn or outdoor area on a suburban block.
Rainforest planting: Sits naturally with tuckeroo, lilly pilly and native frangipani in a subtropical scheme.
Park and school grounds: Strong timber and dense evergreen canopy suit high use public spaces.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 5-6m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 8-10m
Best Planting Season: Spring and early summer in warm districts, any mild month in the subtropics
Soil & Drainage: Deep, moist, well drained soil is ideal, with clay loam acceptable where drainage is adequate
Establishment Care: Water twice weekly through the first summer and taper to fortnightly in the second year. Mulch generously to the drip line and protect young trees from frost in inland or elevated sites until the trunk thickens.
