Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Kanzan Flowering Cherry (Standard) - Prunus serrulata ‘Kanzan’
Kanzan is the cherry people picture when they picture a flowering cherry: heavy double blooms in deep rose pink, packed so tightly along the branches that the whole crown turns solid colour for a fortnight in spring. Grown as a standard on a clear trunk, Prunus serrulata ‘Kanzan’ opens into a vase shape that later broadens into a wide, spreading head. New leaves emerge bronze behind the flowers and the tree finishes the year with orange and gold autumn colour.
Why Kanzan Cherry
Density of Bloom: The double flowers are carried in tight clusters, giving far heavier coverage than single flowered cherries.
Clean Trunk Form: The standard shape lifts the canopy clear, so planting, paving or turf can run right up underneath.
Three Seasons of Interest: Spring blossom, bronze new growth and reliable autumn colour before the branches go bare.
No Fruit Litter: This cultivar sets little or no fruit, which suits paths, driveways and outdoor living areas.
Cold Climate Reliability: It needs a genuinely cold winter to flower well, and it rewards tableland and southern gardens accordingly.
Ideal Applications
Feature Lawn Tree: A single standard in open turf shows the vase form and the spring display at their best.
Formal Avenue: Matched trees down a drive or path produce the classic blossom tunnel effect in cool districts.
Courtyard and Front Garden Shade: Casts light summer shade over seating without the bulk of an evergreen tree.
Seasonal Marker Planting: Used where a client wants the garden to announce spring rather than look the same all year.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): Not a hedging tree; grove plantings sit at 4m to 5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5m to 7m
Best Planting Season: Late autumn to winter while the tree is dormant is ideal, early spring is acceptable
Soil & Drainage: Deep, free draining, fertile soil; cherries decline quickly in compacted or waterlogged ground
Establishment Care: Water deeply through the first two summers and mulch widely, keeping the mulch off the graft and trunk. Prune only in dry weather in late summer rather than winter, as wet season cuts invite the canker and silver leaf problems that shorten the life of ornamental cherries.
